Gold Standard: Malaysia's Under-21 Recurve Archers Take Both Team Titles in Singapore
Team gold in the men's and mixed events, an all-Malaysian 2–3 in the women's individual, and a four-medal tournament for Wan Qayyim Syahmi — the Under-21 recurve squad turned the 2026 Singapore Archery Youth Championship into a showcase.
Shooting the full 70m senior distance, Malaysia's Under-21 recurve archers were among the strongest performers of the 2026 Singapore Archery Youth Championship. Across the men's, women's and mixed events they collected two elimination-round golds, two silvers and a bronze — plus two more golds and a bronze from the ranking round — and left Singapore having beaten Chinese Taipei, the Philippines and a deep club field along the way. At the centre of it all stood Wan Qayyim Syahmi, whose four-medal week made him the standout archer of the age group.
Men's Team — Gold, and Barely a Set Dropped
Malaysia's men's team of Muhammad Akid Bazli, Muhammad Rizq Arif and Wan Qayyim Syahmi saved their best for the podium. After easing past DAD Archery Club 5–1 in the semifinal, they produced a near-flawless gold medal final against top seeds Chinese Taipei, sweeping it 6–0 with three commanding ends.
Mixed Team — Gold Over the Two Individual Champions
The mixed team gold carried an extra layer of quality. Pairing Nur Ieka Hariesya with Wan Qayyim Syahmi, Malaysia's top-seeded duo came through the semifinal 6–2 over Chinese Taipei, then faced a Taipei pairing made up of the tournament's two individual gold medallists, Chang Chun Chia and Zhan Hao Jie. Malaysia took it 5–3, slamming the door with a perfect 40 in the closing end.
Malaysia's second mixed pair, Nur Arissa Najlaa and Muhammad Akid Bazli, reached the bronze medal match before falling to Chinese Taipei 4–5 in a shoot-off, finishing an agonising fourth.
Wan Qayyim — Ranking-Round Leader, Individual Silver
Wan Qayyim Syahmi was in the middle of everything. He topped the men's qualification with 665, then tore through the elimination bracket with three shut-outs — 6–0, 6–0, 6–0 — to reach the gold medal match without dropping a single set. There, Chinese Taipei's Zhan Hao Jie proved the one obstacle he couldn't clear, taking the final 6–4.
Behind him, Muhammad Akid Bazli finished 5th and Muhammad Danish Amsyar 6th, Danish losing a shoot-off quarterfinal to the eventual champion Zhan — three Malaysians inside the top six.
Women's Individual — An All-Malaysian 2–3, Both Denied by a Whisker
Malaysia's two Under-21 women locked up the silver and bronze — and both podium finishes came the hard way, against the same opponent. Nur Arissa Najlaa beat the Philippines' Naina Dominique Tagle 6–4 in the semifinal to reach the final, where Chinese Taipei's Chang Chun Chia edged her in a one-arrow shoot-off after the match finished level. Nur Ieka Hariesya, the top qualifier, also ran into Chang — losing her semifinal in a shoot-off of her own — before regrouping to take bronze.
Qualification — Two Malaysians on Top
The ranking round set the tone. Wan Qayyim Syahmi led the men with 665 over 72 arrows at 70m, while Nur Ieka Hariesya paced the women with 650 and Nur Arissa Najlaa was third on 644 — Malaysia claiming the top qualifying spot in both individual events.
Top qualifier, individual silver, team gold and mixed gold — four medals from four events. Wan Qayyim Syahmi was the archer of the age group in Singapore.
Recurve Under-21 · SingaporeTournament Reflection
Two team titles, four individuals on the podium across the men's and women's draws, and a leading archer in Wan Qayyim Syahmi who medalled in everything he entered — Malaysia's Under-21 recurve group was a class act at 70m. The only regret is how narrow the margins were in the women's individual, where shoot-offs against a single Taipei rival stood between Malaysia and a possible gold. On this evidence, the pipeline behind the senior national squad is in good hands.
